In April of 2017 “Annie’s Law” went into effect. The law increases the license suspension for first OVI offenders to one year.

Steps to Obtaining a Restricted Driver’s License During Your Suspension:
- You will need to obtain an Interlock License from the BMV.
- Make an appointment to have your ignition interlock installed by calling toll-free 800-499-0994.
- Guardian will verify your eligibility for an interlock with the BMV. Once your interlock is installed, Guardian will give you a certificate confirming the installation.
- Obtain SR-22 proof of insurance
- Pay fines and reinstatement fees in person at your local BMV office, by phone by calling 1-866-OPLATES (675-2837), or online at the Ohio BMV website
- Retake and pass the driving knowledge and skills tests, if required.
- Mail documents to Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Attn. RE Fee, P.O. Box 16520, Columbus OH 43216-6520. Mail required documents before your suspension end to minimize delays.
Steps to Reinstate Your Driver’s License After Suspension:
- Serve mandatory suspension time (the required period before interlock may be installed).
- Satisfy any court requirements/fines, if applicable.
- Complete a remedial driving course, if required.
- Retake and pass the driving knowledge and skills tests, if required.
- File and maintain SR22 car insurance for 3 – 5 years, for non-compliance suspensions.
- Make an appointment to have your ignition interlock installed by calling toll-free 800-499-0994.
- Guardian will verify your eligibility for an interlock with the DMV.
- Pay your reinstatement fees.
- Mail any required documents to Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Attn. RE Fee, P.O. Box 16520, Columbus OH 43216-6520. To prevent reinstatement delays, mail documents at least 20 days before the end of your suspension.
If you visit an Ohio BMV office, you may need to provide proof of your identity and Ohio residency. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ website provides a list of acceptable proofs.
