Steps to Regaining Driving Privileges

All Illinois DUI offenders must have a breath alcohol ignition interlock device (BAIID) installed in order to regain their driving privileges during suspension or revocation. First offenders (suspension) can apply for a Monitored Device Driving Permit (MDDP). Multiple offenders (revocation) can apply for a Restricted Driving Permit (RDP).

First Offense – Monitored Device Driving Permit (MDDP)

  • Following a DUI you will receive notice from the Illinois Secretary of State regarding your suspension start date, as well as an application for the MDDP permit.
  • Complete and send in the MDDP application. You can mail it to the address located on the application or Fax to (217) 785-5239. The ILSOS will send a requirements package to you within 2 days.
  • Complete the requirements package, and send with required payments to the IL Secretary of State.
  • Upon review, the Secretary of State office will notify you of the issuance of the MDDP. The permit then gets mailed to you when you are within two weeks or less before the 31st day of your suspension.
  • Once the MDDP is issued, you have 14 days to have a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device (BAIID) installed on all vehicles you wish to drive.
  • Make an appointment to have your ignition interlock installed by calling toll-free 800-499-0994.

Multiple Offenses – Restricted Driving Permit (RDP)

  • To obtain an RDP, you must prove a hardship exists, provide a current professional alcohol/drug evaluation, and, when appropriate, provide proof of remedial education or treatment. You must go to a state-approved substance abuse center for evaluations and treatment.
  • Fill out the Formal Hearing Request Form and mail it to one of the Administrative Hearing Office addresses provided. Petitioners are eligible for a subsequent hearing 90 days after their most recent hearing. Pay the $50 fee.
  • Once approved, you will receive a notification and an RDP in the mail. Within 14 days of the issuance date of your permit, you are required to install the BAIID in any and all vehicles in your name.
